Common DIY AC Repairs
In the dead of summer your dependable AC contractors will be extra busy helping as many people in the community as they can. They’ll do their very best to get to your home as soon as they can, but in the meantime there are a few things you can do to assess and even fix your AC problem.
Before working on the AC, remember to turn off the unit for your safety!
System Reboot
It’s the oldest trick in the book: try turning it off and back on again. It may seem silly, but sometimes your AC system needs a chance to reboot itself and reconnect or realign whatever was out of sorts. To force a reboot, locate and turn off the power to the system. You can cut the power on your electrical circuit or find the power switch for the unit alone.
Cleaning Filters/ Coils
The air filters in your AC system allow clean air to flow not only to your home, but also through your system. Check your air filters to see if they need to be cleaned or replaced to fix common problems like warm air from the vents or your AC not cooling.
The coils in your system are responsible for the cooling process. When they get coatings of dirt layered on them, they can freeze easier and stop the entire process. Easily reached coils can be cleaned if you feel comfortable doing so. A professional will be happy to help you with this task as well.
Breakers/ Fuses
If your AC won’t turn on or is having trouble with power, simply check your circuit box for your home. It’s possible that the power to your HVAC unit has been tripped and just needs to be turned back on. Also, you can check the health of any fuses to make sure nothing’s been burned out or damaged.
Thermostat Settings
If your thermostat is battery powered, always make sure you have working batteries powering it. Another problem with your thermostat could be the settings. If you accidentally set the thermostat to FAN, you may feel only warm air coming from your vents. Double check to make sure it is set on AUTO or COOL. Otherwise, a technician could help you get to the bottom of your thermostat repair.
Defrosting Coils
If your coils do freeze over, it can be a pain to fix. If you want to try to thaw them out before calling for professional help, there are two options. You can turn the unit off and wait for the outside temperature to work on melting the ice. You can also just run the FAN setting on your unit to blow around warm air. Either way, you should wait until your coils are completely thawed before turning the unit on to cool again.
