Why Is My Heating System Blowing Cold Air?

The Thermostat Is Set Incorrectly

The thermostat is a key component when setting the temperature level of your heating system. While it’s easy to adjust the thermostat found in your living room, it’s important you check the thermostat on your furnace. Whenever the seasons change from summer to fall or fall to winter, people often forget to change the thermostat settings on their furnace. Make sure it’s properly adjusted.

It’s also not uncommon for furnace thermostats to break or malfunction. If your furnace thermostat is set correctly but still not producing warm air, you might need a professional to inspect the thermostat further.

Your Filters are Dirty

Filters are designed to catch dust, dirt, and other debris from blowing into your home’s air. Over time, your filters are going to build up so much dust that they won’t be able to do their job properly. This results in not only more dirt blowing into your home’s air, but it also prevents your HVAC system from blowing warm air throughout your home. Furthermore, your HVAC system is going to work much harder trying to warm your home, causing it to use more electricity.

Thankfully, this is an easy fix. Simply replace all your air filters regularly to make sure your home is warmed properly.

Your Furnace Has Overheated

When your furnace overheats, a mechanism will shut your furnace system down. Temporarily it may only blow cold air, but eventually, the furnace will shut off completely. This can happen for a few different reasons.

First, you can try inspecting the furnace’s filter. If it appears to be clogged up with dirt, chances are you just need to replace the air filter.

The furnace could also be experiencing one or multiple mechanical problems. Unless you are a trained HVAC professional, you probably won’t be able to diagnose the issue properly and should call a technician.

The furnace could also be too old. Most furnaces last around 15 to 20 years. If you know your furnace is older, it may be time to replace it.

The Pilot Light is Dirty or Broken

This primarily happens in older furnace systems. Over time, your furnace’s pilot light is going to build up dust and soot. You’ll have to clean it regularly to make sure it works properly. Be sure you power off your furnace completely before attempting to do so.

In some instances, the pilot light can even break. If you feel comfortable, you can attempt to replace it yourself. However, if you feel uncomfortable replacing it, don’t hesitate to call a trained professional.

Leaking Air Duct

Your HVAC system spreads warm air throughout your home using your vent and duct system. Air ducts, however, can be very fragile and become damaged. If the duct system is compromised with holes or tears, your HVAC system is going to have a much harder time keeping your home warm. If the holes or tears are tiny, you can try patching it up with some tape. However, if the damage is much more severe, you’ll likely have to replace the damaged ducts.
